I was concerned how much of a nuisance it was going to be having immovable cars parked , I decided to take some heavy wall tubing and make so temporary axles to keep the cars movable, ali hubs with ball races and threaded RH and LH to take the Rudge Whitworth nuts

Love it. But I think a design more like the White would make more sense. Attaching the engine as part of the axle causes so many issues. Not the least of which is you can move the car unless under its own power.
If I was to build a modern attempt, I would certainly put a dog clutch in the driver train however I would leave the engine it the Doble position, but fixed solidly to the chassis and have inboard disks and independent suspension with drive shafts, the problem with having the engine under the hood is that you run out of space for the generator
In my design the engine is in front, generator is in back over the rear axle. Water and fuel are up front around the firewall. Lots of advantages to this design. The heat is flowing out the back of the car, not in to the cockpit for example.
Keep in mind I dropped out of mechanical engineering because it was too hard.
